Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring humectant protein which forms part of the connective and supportive tissues in our bodies; existing in our eyeballs and cartilages to keep them moist and lubricated. The chemical structure is identical in all living organisms; hence allergic reactions are unlikely to occur, ensuring a very high level of safety.
In the Cosmedicate clinic, a non-animal derived, stabilised form is used, manufactured under the brand names RESTYLANE® and PERLANE®. The injectable material is a transparent viscous gel formulated by a sterile laboratory process.
RESTYLANE® is commonly used for fine lines and wrinkles, whilst PERLANE® provides a more highly concentrated, denser formulation for use in deeper creases or skin indentations. HYLAFORM® and JUVEDERM® are similar (animal derived) alternative brands.
The hyaluronic acid solution is injected directly into the dermis in the designated treatment area. During the treatment procedure some minor stinging or a slight burning sensation may occur as the injections are administered. Clients may be asked to hold a hand mirror during the procedure to help assess when sufficient filler has been injected in order to achieve the desired aesthetic effect. Any redness usually disappears within 24 hours.
Hyaluronic acid fillers provide safe, effective and temporary results, lasting approximately 3-4 months. The hyaluronic acid will gradually biodegrade in the skin and be reabsorbed by the body on average within 3-5 months, generally disappearing at a faster rate in areas where there is more muscle movement. To maintain the desired results, Hyaluronic acid injections must be repeated at regular intervals. Your Cosmedicate consultant will advise you of the treatment frequency required, depending on your skin condition, to maintain your improved appearance.
Allergic reaction is very rarely a problem with injectable hyaluronic acid and since it is derived from a non-animal source, no pre-treatment skin test is required. However a minor risk of infection and other infrequent complications may occur in rare cases and clients are advised not to wear make up or apply creams to the area for 24 hours and should avoid touching the area after treatment to avoid the risk of infection. Contraindications include, known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid, diseases effecting the immune system and pregnancy or breast feeding.
Your Cosmedicate doctor may use a local cream anesthetic to numb the injected area. Alternatively clients may elect to have an injected local anesthetic.
